Beşiktaş Defender Amir Murillo's Marseille Exit Returns to Spotlight as De Zerbi Faces Fresh Criticism

Beşiktaş defender Amir Murillo's departure from Olympique de Marseille has returned to the headlines following further criticism of former Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi by striker Neal Maupay.

Murillo, who joined Beşiktaş in February 2026, previously suggested that his relationship with De Zerbi had deteriorated for personal rather than sporting reasons.

Speaking ahead of Beşiktaş's Europa League meeting with Marseille in September, the Panama international explained that he believed the manager had treated him disrespectfully and that circumstances at the club had effectively forced him to leave.

The issue has attracted renewed attention after Maupay discussed his own experiences under De Zerbi. The French forward described being separated from the first-team environment and having to train independently.

Although Maupay emphasized that he did not wish to dwell on the past, his account has added to public scrutiny of the Italian manager's methods.

De Zerbi subsequently moved to Tottenham Hotspur, while Murillo continued his career in Istanbul. The accounts of the two players provide contrasting perspectives on De Zerbi's management style and the circumstances surrounding departures from Marseille.

Neither account, however, establishes an independent conclusion about the manager's conduct.
